The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Crestor, the blockbuster cholesterol-lowering drug, in January, to help patients who are more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes.
But that's only if patients have had heart problems for more than three years.
Many patients are getting sick from Crestor, a statin that blocks the enzyme that lowers cholesterol in the liver. This is known as a statin drug, meaning it can stop a patient from taking statins.
So the FDA's new advisory panel on Tuesday voted 12-1 in favour of requiring Crestor and other statins for patients on the market to continue taking the drug for longer than six months, even after they've developed liver damage.
The FDA said the drug is effective for more than three years, although it was not clear if Crestor had been added to the market.
"This decision represents an important step in ensuring the safe use of this important medication for patients and physicians," said FDA spokesman BradT. D'Alessandro. "The FDA is working to make Crestor as effective and safe as possible."
The drug was originally approved for use in adults. The FDA has also approved Crestor to help patients who are more prone to heart attacks and strokes.
Crestor is still under review by the FDA after it was linked to fatal heart attacks and strokes in 2011.
The new advisory panel, which has not yet decided on whether to give the drug to patients, said the agency's decision was based on the information gathered from patients' records.
Patients taking Crestor may not have any information on its use in the future. But they can take it as needed, with the drug's dose adjusted periodically.
Patients who stop taking the drug in the first six months of treatment, or who have suffered a heart attack or stroke in the past three months, must consult with their doctor. Patients who stop taking the drug in the first six months of treatment, or who have a rare genetic disorder such as a rare inherited blood disorder, can still be prescribed the drug.
In January, FDA spokeswoman Cindy Whitehead said the company's decision is "not a decision that reflects our policy that reflects our commitment to patient safety and the safety of our patients."
Patients should not stop taking the drug and have their cholesterol tested by their doctor.
A similar committee has been set to consider whether to add Crestor to the market in late 2011.
FDA commissioner Gary T. Wolfe, who is a member of the committee, said the agency had made "important decisions" in this regard.
"Today's vote marks a significant milestone for the agency," he said.
But drugmakers have been slow to make progress, and the FDA's advisory panel has not yet decided how long it will take to address the issue.

"This decision reflects our commitment to patient safety and the safety of our patients," she said.
She said some patients have already taken their cholesterol tests and are now taking Crestor.
