Crestor works by reducing a certain enzyme within the body that produces cholesterol. It belongs to a class of medications called statins.
Cholesterol is a form of lipid, a waxy substance that helps your body make cells, vitamins, and certain hormones. It is not inherently bad. Your liver produces an enzyme that synthesizes cholesterol to help with the above healthy functions. Additional cholesterol is introduced to the body through certain foods like meat, poultry, and dairy products.
There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs). LDLs carry cholesterol throughout the body, delivering cholesterol to cells that need it. HDLs carry excess LDLs back to the liver, where they are broken down and flushed from the body. While LDLs play a key role in cell health, they build up when the body has more cholesterol than the cells need. This buildup turns into plaque in the arteries (blood vessels). As plaque covers the artery walls, the blood vessels become narrow. This makes it harder for blood to flow through the body, which can lead to heart disease and heart failure.
Statins work by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver, which lowers the overall cholesterol levels in the body. Not only do statins decrease levels of LDLs in the body, but they can also raise the level of HDLs in the body. In effect, they keep the body from making too much of the “bad” cholesterol that builds up in arteries while increasing the amount of “good” cholesterol that carries the “bad” out of the body. This dual action has been shown, along with diet and exercise, to lower overall cholesterol levels in patients effectively.

Crestor Side effects Side effects of Crestor Crestor is well-documented. However, in some cases, these side effects may need to be treated without delay.Have you ever asked your pharmacist what the cash price is and it says $99.99? Doesn’t seem to be too much of a money-saving option.
Crestor, the generic form of Atorvastatin, is available in $9.99 cash-paying-signs for $1.83. That’s a lot of cash for two people, even with insurance.
But for those on health insurance, Crestor is a better deal for them. The cash price for that is $99.99, which is pretty much the same as the $99.99 Crestor price for $2,299.98 for $1.83, while the $9.99 Crestor cash price is about $3.99.
“It’s pretty close,” says pharmacist David Nissen, director of the National Health Statistics and Policy Center at the University of Minnesota, who surveyed the cost of Crestor at three different pharmacies in the Minnesota area:
CVS Healthcost $4,000.00Walgreenscost $4,999.00Walmart
Nissen says, for people with insurance, it would be easier to pay $4,999.00 for Crestor if they have insurance and need to pay that in cash.
“It is so easy to pay cash,” Nissen says. “The price is a lot more affordable.”
The biggest difference between Crestor and Atorvastatin, which Nissen says can be as much as $500 a year at most pharmacies, is the generic form. That’s equivalent to $500 for Crestor at Walmart.
The biggest difference between the Crestor and generic Crestor is price. The Crestor price is about $3,250.00 for $1.83, and the generic Crestor price is about $3,999.00 at Walgreens, compared with $3,250.00 at CVS.
Nissen says that’s why the cost difference between the generic and Crestor is so small.
“There are a lot of factors that can contribute to this,” he says. For example, at a retail store, it’s a good idea to take a blood pressure reading before you buy medication, but not at the same time, Nissen says. You could take a blood pressure test, and that could give you a false-positive result because Crestor is a PPI. But if you take a blood pressure test at the same time, you won’t know whether that’s true or not.
Nissen says that for people who need to take Crestor in cash, he has a good idea of what it’s going to cost them. “It would cost you $9,000.00,” he says.
Crestor isn’t the only thing that can contribute to the cost of Crestor at some pharmacies.
“They can all have different prices,” Nissen says. “They can all have different benefits.”
Nissen says, for example, the average cash price of Crestor at Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid and Rite Aid prices at Walgreens are about $50.00.
“There are a lot of factors that can contribute to this,” Nissen says.
But if you take Crestor at the same time, you won’t know whether that’s true or not.
Nissen says, for example, the average cash price of Crestor at Walmart is about $54.00.
“It would cost you $9,000.00,” Nissen says.
